The media image

Managing image is central to being ‘clean and safe’. Ambassador supervisors do not advertise incidents of verbal and physical assaults on ambassadors (reported in anonymous interviews). Consistent with this, a ‘clean and safe’ logic also informs interactions between ambassadors and the media.

A common feature of programmes is recognition that ambassadors need public relations instruction. One manual devotes two and a half pages to handling media interviews, including how to avoid misinterpretation and misquoting. Ambassadors are advised to keep responses ‘five to fifteen seconds long’ and to ‘resist the urge to elaborate’ if the interviewer is silent following a response to avoid distortion (Manual 1). Thus, there is a sense in which ambassador interactions with the media are also to be ‘clean and safe’.

Another aspect of media relations training deals with how best to ‘spin’ responses, to conjure up imaginings of a safe city core:

In your answers, your first-person testimonial about what you see and do should support the fact that Downtown is a safe place to visit. You don’t necessarily need to say the word “safe,” let the reporter make that conclusion based on your comments. It will come through much stronger in the story if it’s an observed fact, rather than a direct quote from you. (Manual 1)

Interviews are opportunities to ‘help’ the media conclude that the city centre is safe for consumption. Ambassadors seek physical security, but also to represent city centres as safe to wider publics.
